Description
Seamus Heaney ~ Edward McGuire
Seamus Heaney by Edward McGuire from the Ulster Museum Collection. This portrait of a young Seamus Heaney has beautiful detail. Echoing the Renaissance portraits, using symbols as a code to tell us more about the sitter. The birds and foliage in the background of the painting allude to Seamus Heaney’s constant themes in his poetry. Namely nature and its impact on the people surrounded by it. The homely setting of the portrait with the creased but well-ironed table cloth represents Heaney’s preoccupation with the mundane and how the divine can be seen in this ordinariness of life.
