Description
Florida ~ Sir John Lavery.
Painted at the famous Breakers Hotel Florida at the New Year celebrations in 1927. Christmas in Florida was regarded as a working holiday for Lavery. The artist painted beach scenes by the pier and the hotel foyer. This image of a woman reading with her feet up on a chair is the epitome of holiday relaxation. The tennis courts in the background and the tall palms all add to the exotic in this card.

Sir John Lavery
Sir John Lavery a great exponent of the “Kodak Moment” capturing a fleeting look. A second in time securing the small everyday moments experienced by everyone. He recorded and documented life in the late 19th and early 20th Century through his sketches and paintings. The practice of en Plein-air or painting outside contributed to the immediacy and snapshot nature of the work of Lavery.
One of ‘the Glasgow Boys’, John Lavery was born in Belfast in 1856. His father was an unsuccessful publican. After that the family moved to Glasgow, he was apprenticed to a photographer. Ultimately his experience here was to prove useful in his busy portrait practice later. In 1881 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris.
Above all Lavery wanted to be a portrait painter although his earliest successes were with landscapes. When Queen Victoria sat for him, however, his success as a fashionable portraitist was assured. He bought a house in Tangiers in the early years of the 20th century and spent the winter months there. Returning to paint society and political portraits in England and Ireland and continuing to visit France and the Continent. His marriage to Hazel Trudeau in 1910 confirmed his place at the centre of Edwardian society. He visited Ireland frequently during the 1920s. During this time Lavery records important moments in the history of the new state and the faces of some of those most prominent in its evolution and subsequent administration. He came to live in Ireland after his wife’s death and died in Co. Kilkenny in 1941.
