Window ~ William Orpen is a painting of a woman looking out of a large window onto a London street is perfect in every detail. This painting was painted late in Orpen’s career, and at once you can see the mastery. The light from the window illuminates the woman and the flowers on the table beside her. The chandelier hanging from the ceiling is painted so delicately that it  catches the light in a very realistic manner.

Sir William Orpen.

Born in Blackrock Dublin, William Orpen was the youngest son of Arthur Herbert Orpen, a solicitor, and his wife, Anne Caulfield. Both his parents were amateur painters.

Orpen had plenty of natural talent and enrolled, six weeks before his thirteenth birthday, at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. During his six years at the college he won every major prize there. He then left Ireland to attend the Slade School of Art in London. At the Slade Orpen mastered oil painting and began to experiment with different painting techniques and effects. He would include mirrors in his pictures to create images within images. His painting is reminiscent of Dutch interiors with the muted tones and deep shadows which are display in the Window.
