Lough an Mhuilinn ~ Charles Vincent Lamb is a painting of a lake in Connemara County Galway. Depicted are a lakeside dwelling, two currahcs, and a woman washing clothes in the lake. The background sky is stormy and unsettled. The woman’s clothes are reminiscent of Paul Henry’s people of Achill. The reflection in the water of the cottage is broken up and disturbed by the woman’s washing. In the picture, the viewer can see multiple houses suggesting a community in the remoteness of the Connemara landscape. The nuances of the grey shades used by Charles Vincent Lamb in Lough an Mhuilinn make this Irish greeting card very pleasing.

Charles Vincent Lamb.

Charles Vincent Lamb (1893-1964)  born in Portadown, Co. Armagh. Lamb worked as a house painter before teaching art and painting professionally. Firstly Lamb studied at the local Technical School. After that, he took evening classes at the Belfast School of Art. Finally, he was granted a scholarship to Dublin’s Metropolitan School of Art in 1917. Exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1919, and thereafter averaging about four paintings per show until his final years.

With a deep affinity for the West of Ireland, Lamb travelled around the area painting. Living for many years in Carraroe, Co. Galway where this painting is set, and where Lamb ran a summer painting school.

In conclusion, Lamb became a member of the RHA and RUA exhibiting widely throughout Ireland and America, including at the Olympic Art Exhibition in Los Angeles (1932). A memorial show was held in his honour in 1969 in the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and many of his works are held in Irish public museums.
