Mildred Anne Butler
Butler is an Irish artist who works in watercolour and oil. Mainly painting landscapes and animal subjects. Born in Kilmurry Thomastown, County Kilkenny Mildred lives most of her life here. She paints scenes of the flora and fauna in her garden. Poppy-land is no exception. The evocative depiction of this wildflower meadow makes a wonderful greeting card.
Butler achieves distinction in her lifetime. She exhibits in the major galleries in Ireland and England. Becomes a member of the Royal Academy in 1893. In 1896, Butler’s Morning Bath exhibits at the Royal Academy. Butler becomes an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1896. Later, she is granted full membership in 1937. Mildred Butler is elected by the Ulster Academy of Arts in 1930. Butler virtually stops painting by the 1930s due to arthritis and dies in 1941, aged 83.
