The light in Achill has a special quality that many artists have recognised. Lying on the Western edge of Europe the Atlantic stretches out on the horizon. McCaul’s paintings take inspiration from the natural landscapes and coastline of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Achill Island, which is located off Ireland’s western seaboard has a profound influence on his paintings. His paintings echo the natural beauty and colour of the surrounding landscape. Blue Sky illustrates the views of the Atlantic and the many headlands you can see.
In broad strokes McCaul depicts houses, roads, farm buildings and country lanes in simple, uncluttered compositions. His paintings seek to elicit the emotion that allows room for the viewer to get lost in the subject. They are not just there to describe the landscape but to stir an emotional response to the feeling of the landscape, conveying movement and energy and the light around it.
