Description
Rain ~ Sir John Lavery.
Rain by Sir John Lavery shows a scene from Tangier bay in Morocco. Lavery’s house in Tangier provided inspiration for many seascapes. The colour profile of the painting would have been incredibly novel at the time. A holiday moment captured in a photograph. A photograph takes seconds but this snapshot sketch would have taken hours, and perhaps even days of additions and layering.

Sir John Lavery
John Lavery born in Belfast in 1856. The family moves to Glasgow where Lavery works in a photographer’s studio. His experience here proves useful in his whole career as an artist. He has his first art classes at the Haldane Academy in Glasgow. A visit to Grez in 1884 leads to a friendship with members of the artists’ colony there. Although influenced by these artists, Lavery is more interested in scenes of leisure and luxury.
Lavery buys a house in Tangiers in the early years of the 20th century and winters there. He returns to paint society and political portraits in England and Ireland whilst continuing to visit France and the Continent. His marriage to Hazel Trudeau in 1910 confirmed his place at the centre of Edwardian society. In 1917 he is appointed Official War Artist to the Royal Navy and is knighted the following year. He visits Ireland frequently during the 1920s recording important moments in the history of the new state. Together with the faces of some of those most prominent in its evolution and subsequent administration. He comes to live in Ireland after his wife’s death and dies in Co. Kilkenny in 1941.
