Stanhope Forbes
Stanhope Forbes an Irish artist and founding member of the Newlyn School of painters. A champion of Plein-air painting, his work is greatly influenced by the French artist Jules Bastien-Lepage. Above all, Forbes loved Plein-air paintings, which he called, “a breath of fresh air in the tired atmosphere of the studios.” Born in 1857 in Dublin, Ireland, Forbes studies at the Royal Academy Schools. After that, at the private atelier of Léon Bonnat in Paris. After that, returning to England, Forbes and his wife the Canadian-born painter Elizabeth Forbes founded their own school of Plein-air painting in Newlyn, West Cornwall. Notably, over the course of his career, his depictions of scenes and landscapes became lighter in color and include fewer human figures.
Forbes died on March 2, 1947, in Newlyn, United Kingdom. In conclusion, today, Forbes’ works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum.
