Description
Sunlight on Houses ~ Harry Kernoff.
Sunlight on Houses by Harry Kernoff in this painting depicting the narrow streets of Dublin Kernoff is at his best. The background of the painting shows the viewer the front of a house, with a railing to enclose the front garden. This is a large house compared with the smaller workmen’s cottages in the foreground. There are figures in the painting two men walking with jaunty swaggers and children playing on the street. The colour palette that Kernoff uses of warm pinks and purples all help the viewer to feel the sunlight in the painting. Kernoff has captured the history of the Dublin streets in his work and in this painting. Sunlight on Houses Dublin ~ Kernoff is a masterpiece and available to send as a card.

Harry Kernoff
Harry Kernoff born in London in 1900. His father is Russian and his mother Spanish. The family moves to Dublin when Harry is fourteen and he studies drawing and painting at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. Today he is one of the foremost twentieth-century Irish painters and an important chronicler of the city of Dublin. Kernoff’s somewhat naive paintings lend an air of a Dublin Lowry to his work.
Kernoff remains in Dublin until his death in 1974. His paintings of the city and its’ people show great empathy. Irish landscapes, portraits, and illustrations are also in the body of work that he left. There has been no major retrospective of his work but in the years to come, he will be recognized as a major influence in world art.
In 1926 Kernoff began showing at the Royal Hibernian Academy. In addition, his work is constant as he averages five paintings a year from this date until 1974. This is an extraordinary achievement for any artist. 1930 sees Kernoff exhibiting as part of the Irish friends of the Soviet Russia delegation in Russia. The RHA elected Kernoff as a full member in 1935. An exhibition in the Victor Waddington Gallery in London sees woodcuts added to Kernoff’s work.
