Winetavern Street ~ Harry Kernoff is a painting of a street in Dublin located in the medieval heart of Dublin close to Christchurch Cathedral. The street originally derived its name from the many drinking establishments located there. Kernoff’s distinctive, almost naïve-like style is on full display. Above all the life of ordinary Dubliners is revealed, and Kernoff has a clear affection for his subject matter. Kernoff painted many scenes of daily life which are full of interesting, incidental details.

About Kernoff:

Harry Kernoff was born in London in 1900. His father was Russian and his mother Spanish. The family moved to Dublin when Harry was fourteen. He studied drawing and painting at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. Today he is one of the best Irish painters and an important chronicler of the city of Dublin. Kernoff’s somewhat naive paintings lend an air of a Dublin Lowry to his work.

Kernoff remains in Dublin until his death in 1974. Above all his paintings of the city and its’ people are executed with great empathy. There has been no major retrospective of his work but in the years to come, he will be recognized as a major influence in world art.
