Hans Iten

Swiss painter Hans Iten was born in Zurich and studied painting and drawing at the School of Art, St. Gall Switzerland. Iten moved to Belfast in 1904 to work as a damask designer with linen manufacturers McCrum, Watson, and Mercer Ltd.

Iten a member of the Belfast Art Society, vice-president of the Ulster Arts Club, and one of the first nine academicians elected to the Ulster Academy in 1930. Paintings by Hans Iten are held in major public collections including Queen’s University, the Ulster Museum, and Dublin City Gallery at the Hugh Lane.

In addition, he completed many landscapes, drawing inspiration from the countryside of County Antrim and County Down. He also painted a number of Swiss rural scenes. Iten was among the first artists elected to the Ulster Academy of Arts.

In conclusion, Iten unfortunately, died later the same year while on a visit to Switzerland. In 1971, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland staged a highly successful retrospective exhibition of Iten’s works.
