Roderic O’Conor
Born in Ireland in 1860 O’Conor attends Art school in Dublin. Much of O’Conor’s career is spent in Belgium and France. O’Conor experiments with the techniques of impressionism, neo-impressionism, and pointillism. Spending time at the artists’ colonies in Grez-sur-Loing and Pont-Aven, O’Conor comes into contact with Paul Gauguin. The two artists become friends.
In 1903 O’Conor moves to Paris and becomes immersed in the cultural life there. In 1933, O’Conor marries his partner Henrietta Honta, who had often modelled for the artist. After that, the couple lived in France and Spain, and the artist died at their home in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1940.
National Gallery retrospective
In conclusion, in 2018 the National Gallery of Ireland mounted a retrospective of O’Conor’s work. Above all, the exhibition demonstrated his highly original contribution to art in Europe in the late nineteenth century.
